Our Sustainable Commitments
At Pylewell Park, we are committed to sustainability and are actively taking steps to reduce our environmental impact whilst enhancing the wellbeing of our guests, team, and local community. Based in the heart of the New Forest and with the Solent on our doorstep, we recognise our responsibility to protect and preserve the natural beauty that surrounds us.
Reducing Waste
Flower Composting & Reuse – We compost flowers after events, ensuring they return to the earth naturally, and repurpose leftover flowers whenever possible.
Recycling & Waste Reduction – We actively prioritise use of recyclable materials, away from single-use materials such as some plastics. Ensuring that we are reducing waste to landfill.
Paperless Collateral – We operate a paper-free office as much as possible, we reduce unnecessary printing by providing digital brochures and supplier information instead of physical copies.
Sustainable Sourcing & Supporting Local
Locally Sourced Produce – We partner with local suppliers to reduce carbon footprint of produce and connect with small local businesses who prioritise their own sustainability efforts. Sourcing coffee, pastries, honey, tomatoes and much more from just down the road.
Sustainable Catering – We collaborate with caterers who prioritise sustainability, including Lettice, a B Corp-certified company, and The Kitchen Social, specialists in plant-based cuisine.
Support Plant-Rich Diets – We offer delicious vegan options at breakfast, work with plant-based caterers, and provide dairy alternatives such as almond, oat, and coconut milk at our tea and coffee stations.
Sustainable Supplier List – We provide couples and clients with a curated list of sustainable suppliers, offering tips and inspiration for making their event as eco-friendly as possible. These suppliers come with their own verified sustainability certifications and standards which align with our own and those of our clients.
Toiletries – We have refillable toiletries in our bathrooms so we have no single-use plastic in our bathrooms – minimising waste.
Furniture – We upcycle furniture within the house and buy pre-owned as much as possible to reduce the carbon impact from purchasing new, and to elongate the life cycle of the furniture to save it just going to landfill.
Protecting Nature & Enhancing Biodiversity
Foraging & Natural Styling – We encourage couples, clients and florists to responsibly forage from the estate, incorporating seasonal foliage into their weddings and events in an eco-friendly way.
Bees & Biodiversity – Estate conservation and the local environment are key priorities. We encourage our ecosystem by keeping bees, which produce honey for Pylewell breakfasts, and looking after our local fauna and flora by maintaining hedgerows and not overly mowing.
Charity & Community Support – We have a charitable partnership with Oakhaven Hospice, The tomatoes grown in our estate greenhouses are served at breakfast and sold to local restaurants, with all proceeds donated to Oakhaven Hospice.
Wellbeing & Responsible Work Practices
Promoting Flexible & Remote Working – We encourage our team to work from home at least one day a week, reducing commuting emissions while improving work-life balance.
Wellness Walks & Sea Swimming – Our team regularly takes wellness walks on the estate, and in the summer, we swim in the sea before or after work to promote wellbeing and connection with nature.
Wider Estate
The House and Grounds:
The house sits in a listed park and garden. Most of the built structures on the Estate are also listed. Sensitive repair and maintenance through the reuse of materials is a priority. Traditional craftsman techniques are utilised.
This includes the use of lime mortar, second-hand clay tiles, and spot welding of existing roof structures or lead.
Farming:
On the in-hand farmland, the Estate have a Higher-Level Stewardship scheme in situ which encourages landowners to undertake environmental management practices which benefits high-priority areas. Our tenant farmers also are encouraged to engage in schemes such as the Sustainable Farming Incentive which helps pays famers to produce food sustainably whilst protecting the environment.
Redundant Buildings:
The Estate are committed to preserving and utilising existing assets. Our Grade II listed Mill is currently undergoing extensive renovation to provide office spaces which will help provide additional income for the Estate to further reinvest in existing assets i.e. improving the energy efficiency in our residential let portfolio to obtain better EPC ratings.
Assets are being put to new uses to generate income, rather than new assets being built.
Woodland:
The Estate are currently producing a Woodland Management Plan to proactively manage the 95 hectares of woodland across the Estate. This will include thinning, felling and replanting to ensure the woodlands are in the best health today and for future generations.
We are always looking for ways to improve our sustainability efforts and welcome collaboration with like-minded businesses, couples, clients and suppliers who share our values.
